Epson 24XL ink cartridges

24XL is a six-ink photo set — the Elephant range — for Epson's higher-end Expression Photo machines. Light cyan and light magenta join the usual four, which is what these printers were bought for.

Each of the six filled to the original specification, sealed and chip-tested. On coated photo paper the light inks do the work in pale areas, keeping gradients smooth rather than stepped.

24XL fits seven Epson printers: the XP-55, XP-750, XP-760, XP-850, XP-860, XP-950 and XP-960.

It adds light cyan and light magenta to black, cyan, magenta and yellow. These are photo-oriented Expression machines, and the two extra inks give far smoother tonal transitions than four colours manage. All six must be fitted for the printer to work.

The fit is identical and the XL holds more ink. Photo printing gets through ink quickly, particularly the light colours, so the XL tends to pay for itself on these machines.

All of them. Every colour in the range is a separate cartridge, so any one can be ordered by itself. Worth noting that the printer stops if any fitted cartridge runs dry, so it will not print in black and white with an empty light magenta.

Sealed, upright, cool and out of direct sunlight. Unopened they keep well for a long time. Once the foil is broken the ink can start to dry, so only unwrap a cartridge when you are ready to fit it.
